Be on time…

Students will be bringing the following letter home next week on Tuesday.  Please take the time to review with your child as we would like to increase the number of our students getting to class on time.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

At Lackawanna Middle School we work hard to create a climate of high expectations for academics as well as behavior.  We believe that punctuality is a good lifelong skill to possess.  Tardiness to class wastes instructional time not only for the late student but for all students in the classroom. When students are unsupervised in hallways and restrooms after the tardy bell rings—whether at the beginning of school or during passing periods—there is ample opportunity for bullying and other misconduct. This misbehavior can carry over into the classroom, thus wasting even more instructional time.

Starting this week we will be proactively addressing tardy students.  All misbehavior is an instructional opportunity. All students will be hearing a consistent message on Monday, November 2nd, that it’s important to be on time because you don’t want to miss out on learning.  Random sweeps will then occur throughout the week to help show students that tardiness is not acceptable and to reduce the overall number of tardies.  A random sweep will consist of teachers standing at doorways during passing times encouraging students to be on time.  At the tardy bell, classroom doors will be closed and all students still in the hallways will go to the cafeteria. Student names will be recorded and they will receive a pass back to class.  Being caught in a hall sweep the 2nd time will result in a 15 minute lunch detention.  A third time will lead to an after school detention.

Please speak with your son/daughter about the importance of being to class on time. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact main office at 716-827-6704.

Introduction…

October 21, 2015

Dear Lackawanna Middle School Community,

Greetings! I am Beth Schill, your new middle school principal. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve Lackawanna Middle, and look forward to meeting each of you.  Please join me November 9th for our first Principal’s coffee at 6pm.

I have already experienced the most wonderful welcome from faculty, staff and students. As I make this transition, I am aware of the anticipation and eagerness that accompanies new leadership in any organization. I know that change can provoke both excitement and anxiety. In order to help everyone feel a bit more settled and prepared, I’d like to give you a bit of information about me. I have been an elementary principal in the Greater Amsterdam City School District. As well as a high school and middle school assistant principal in Syracuse City Schools.  I also taught sixth grade in a middle school. I feel these experiences suit me well for this position.

Personally I am excited to be in the Buffalo area as it brings my husband and I closer to family. I have two sons who have graduated high school so I know very well the importance of having a strong middle school experience in order to meet that goal of walking across the graduation stage.

I have a collaborative approach to leadership and want you to feel comfortable stopping by, picking up the phone or sending an email at any time. I believe strongly that it is people who make the difference within our schools and I look forward to working with you.

Supporting our students to do well at school, and in their lives, is the center of our work. I am honored to have been selected to serve this community, and will work hard to gain your trust and respect as the Lackawanna Middle School principal.

Sincerely,

Beth Schill
